Carlos Mata

1949 - 2008

Spain

Carlos Mata was born in 1949 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, and died in July 2008. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona and Paris. He searched for the essence of forms and reduced them to their essential lines. Upon first encountering his work, you are surprised by the tenderness in his sculptures. It is as if the artist takes the best from the given (animals, people and things) to show us and make us enjoy that one moment. Mata shows both the creativity and mystery of prehistoric art in his sculptures: bulls, cows and stylized horses, representing the symbolic meaning of the animal. Carlos Mata’s sculptures are based on memories from his childhood, and he goes to great lengths to match the picture from his memory as precisely as possible. This artist knows how to find the original reality that defined his psyche so long ago. That is why Mata’s images are dark and essential. They seem playful, but guarantee an intense concept. Mata’s work leads us into a universe of memories, his experiences, his nostalgic feelings, evoking an irrevocable past, but with the present in our minds. He is very interested in the archaeological aspect, as if our memories are the remains.
